Know Your Value,
Improve Your Life

Kay Fittes, April, 2019

Did you know that April 2 was Equal Pay Day?  We all know April 15 is when our tax returns are due; however, Equal Pay Day marks the 3 plus additional months that a woman needs to work to earn as much as a man earned the previous year.  In other words, she’s working a full year plus three more months just to catch up with what a man earns for doing the same job.  You got it!

Take Steps to Move the
Needle on Pay Equity

  1. Remember, this is not only about your needs, this issue is about your value, which impacts how others see you and how you see yourself.  To begin the research pertinent to your field, ask three people in your industry their salary range.  Get actual specific salary ranges if you can.

  2. Once you’ve figured out what you’ll be asking for, practice saying the numbers out loud until you can have it come out of your mouth without sticking in your throat.  You should even go so far as to create a script for your ask and find someone to help with mock interviewing.

  3. This one is something to start and continue!  Start by writing down your value list, including the specific skills, talents and deliverables you bring to your work and your workplace.  Use the list to develop your case for the ask you want to make, including what you have done that should warrant a raise.  Remember, if you can’t state the case, nobody will!

Let’s take your desire to have your skills, strengths and salary match by starting a coaching relationship.  Call Kay at 513-561-4288 or email me at

Client Testimonial - Christine R. Ross

Tiffanie Demasters

Kay speaks frequently at Toastmasters events, and I attended every one of her sessions that I could.  I used Kay’s being on the agenda to sell Toastmasters’ conferences to other people!  I knew she provided private coaching, but I was reluctant to take the plunge until two women whom I trust and whose opinion I value told me about their work with Kay.

My experience has been enlightening, at times extremely uncomfortable, and probably one of the best things I’ve ever done.  I’ve learned some difficult things about myself:

  • Good girls defy authority by never getting around to doing the things they really don’t want to do – rebellion by omission.
  • Being a fully functioning adult means that I must be my own parent; no one else is going to make me accomplish anything.
  • As an extrovert, I let my need for personal contact erode the time I should use to complete projects that will impact my bottom line, and I worry too much about people liking me.

As a result, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.  I learned to focus my time on the things that matter, not just on the current to-do list.  I changed the way I manage my team and the manner with which I interact with people higher up the chain of command.  I prepared more thoroughly for meetings and presentations.  I got things done.

If you’re thinking about working with a coach, I say just do it!  It will be worth the investment you make in yourself.
