Proactive-Reactive Two Way Street

Boss Requires Relationship Management Too

Kay Fittes, October, 2018

While you probably think of management as the relationship you have with the people who work for you, management is a two-way street and your boss requires some relationship management too.  Even if you’re an entrepreneur, you may have a similar relationship with a board chair or someone else in your sphere of influence.

First of all, it’s important to understand that managing the boss is not selling out or acquiescing to anything.  Managing the boss and thinking about how best to do that does not mean you love everything she/he does.  This is like so many other issues we discuss in career coaching.  There’s a balance, so be smart!

Kay’s Consulting Corner

Kay Fittes

Each month in this section, Kay offers actionable career consulting tips.

Not just thinking, DOING!

  1. Finessing the Boss:  Start by taking 10 minutes to write down the absolute truths about your boss. What are their strongest characteristics, management styles?  What have I missed?  What have I not thought of?

    • What are his/her strongest characteristics, management styles and tasks to be avoided?

    • You’ve probably used Clifton Strength Finders for yourself, now try thinking about the strengths list with your boss in mind to identify his/her characteristics.  Here is the link to Strength Finders: CliftonStrengths

    • Take this information and think about what you would do differently, and write down your thoughts.
  1. Think about what are the interests of your boss, what does she/he like to do?  For example, does she follow FC Cincinnati soccer, is he on the ballet or other arts board?  Ask about their interests and possibly share some tickets.  Remember, people who the boss likes, are more likely to receive new opportunities.

  2. Do not become indispensable in your job.  For example, while you might take something off the boss’s plate to handle something he/she doesn’t like to do, that’s great, yet you have to find the delicate balance between doing and demonstrating you’re ready to move up the corporate ladder.  In other words, your boss will be able to live without you and find someone else qualified to hold your current position.

If you haven’t found your stride or you are ready to make a career push, let me guide you in some next steps.  Please call me at 513-561-4288 or email me at kay@highheeledsuccess.com.

Virtual Group Coaching Client Testimonials

Testimonials

My first experience with the 6-week virtual coaching program created many new challenges for me.  There was a very steep learning curve.  I had to plan the approach and coaching goals, master new technologies and find more work time to ensure this new venture was a success, which is why we’ll be starting again with a new class in January.  I’m so pleased with the results and our High-Heeled success clients provided very positive feedback.

Here is what they had to say:

“I look forward to the group meetings each week.  You may wonder what could be accomplished in only 75 minutes?  A lot!  Kay understands the value of group coaching, as the participants begin to form a synergy, coaching one-another with both personal and business growth.  The course content is rich with new helpful information, building one week to another.

Kay’s experience allows her to have a laser-like insight into deep problems and therefore, resolve them with concise, affirmative action steps.  My own “Aha” came when I was taking advantage of the one-on-one hour coaching with Kay that is part of the program.  I felt I had hit a ceiling with my practice.  With revolutionary insight (I do mean that), Kay literally turned my thinking upside down.  I had my business model backward, which was causing my stymied practice.  Kay changed my entire paradigm of doing business, which allowed me to change, and has freed me to be successful!”
Karin B. Kirkendol TH.M.,B.C.P.C, C.R.M.

“Seminar and coaching work with Kay Fittes exponentially helps today’s juggling career woman identify her talent and skills set while elevating her impact and performance both personally and professionally.  I have admired Kay’s work for almost 20 years.  Her ability to ignite enthusiasm with and for others is exemplary of her character and drive.  One walks away after coaching with Kay with a sense of keen self-awareness, clarity, genuine excitement and a well-prepared plan to create challenge-based goals.”
Mary Baugh Martin, Marketing and Communications Professional

“This virtual coaching series was an exceptional experience for me.  I’m currently transitioning back into the workforce after a lengthy sabbatical.  Kay’s experience and strategies helped me:

  • Build professional relationships and set boundaries
  • Stand out in a crowded field
  • Understand the importance of networking
  • Identify my talents and hone my area of expertise

One hour a week changed my way of thinking about myself and exposed ways I hold myself back from taking my career to a high level.  I would highly recommend this series to other women!  I give it five stars!”
Lisa Bruffey

“I feel very fortunate to have been a member of “The High-Heeled Success Visibility for Advancement Solution Coaching Group for Women”.  When I joined, I was at place in my life where I’d lost my motivation and drive for some of my goals.  I felt disheartened.  However, with each call, Kay offered a plethora of proven methods with recommendations for personalizing each one.  So, I thought why not give it one more try.  With each effort, I started to awaken.  I could’ve never imagined the opportunities I would reap by deciding to be intentional about this program and my success.  I feel stronger, wiser and rejuvenated!  Kay, you are first-class!  Huge THANK YOU!”
