Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is a Critical Factor for Success

Self-Awareness, Emotions,
Empathy at Work

Kay Fittes, June, 2018

While you might not think much about the topic of emotional intelligence, it’s an issue that comes up frequently during my individual client sessions.  Putting your best foot forward as an emotionally intelligent boss and co-worker is a need in the workplace, a need for anyone who manages people.

By definition, emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of your feelings, being in control of them and able to express them.  For example, if you’re going to succeed with challenging employees, the administrator needs to set the tone.  The administrator needs to serve as the model for what you want others to emulate.

Best Leaders Have High EI

  1. What are my hot-button issues?  Ask yourself, what sets me off?  What are the circumstances that cause a tipping point?  If you know you have issues with over-reacting, keep a journal to identify your triggers.  Create a tool that lists the events or people that push your buttons.

  2. Ask yourself who triggers me?  Begin to develop an understanding of who triggers you and ask yourself does that individual remind you of someone else?  Possibly someone from your past?  Does the person someone challenge something that you value?

  3. Challenge for you!  For three weeks, complete a one minute review of your day.  Ask yourself what were the two things that I did well?  What were the two things I could have handled more effectively?  Once you begin to identify certain issues, you can create an accountability scan for your own review or to share with your EI mentor.  If you have a mentor, you can make yourself accountable to send the scan to be reviewed once a week.

Are you convinced that your EI needs more than self-help?  If you need guidance in developing your Emotional Intelligence, professional coaching could be an important step.  Please give me a call at (513) 561-4288 or connect with me via email at kay@highheeledsuccess.com.

Client Testimonial - Christine Luken

Christine Luken

Two years ago, Kay Fittes presented a breakout session at the Northern Kentucky Chamber’s Women’s Summit.  Her presentation was impactful and left me wanting more.  I signed up for her emails and soon after attended one of Kay’s full day workshops on honing your presentation skills.’ I realized that she has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and she was the speaking coach for me!

Kay isn’t just a coach, she’s also a friend and a cheerleader.  She will give you encouragement blended with a loving kick-in-the-pants when necessary.  Kay’s feedback and suggestions are right on target.

Kay helped me to refine my professionalism, presentation skills, and content to really take my business to the next level.  Working with her has led to me being interviewed on television and regularly appearing as a guest for a variety of podcasts.  I now know how to prepare, present, and interact with my audience confidently.  She also shed light on the business aspect of speaking, so I understand how to charge for my various speaking engagements.

If you want to take your confidence and presenting skills to the next level, Kay Fittes is your coach!
