Finding Balance When You Want to Wear Flip-Flops

Kay Fittes, June, 2017

Successfully balancing work and life is always challenging, yet finding your equilibrium in high heels can be even more challenging as attitudes shift during the summer months.  The entire work world seems to redirect a certain amount of focus toward summer life style and vacation, and you might find you want to swap your high heels for your flip-flops.

There are unique circumstances to consider in the summer as you plan to take vacation, do more at work while someone else is on vacation and possibly juggle out-of-school children while maintaining your normal work schedule.  Let’s dig our toes into the sand and ponder how you can take advantage of this time to improve your work-life balance.

Tips on Summertime
Work-Life Balance

  1. Working from home.  If you periodically work remotely, work outside on a deck or in the park dressed casually, rather than in your office in business attire.  If you have this kind of flexibility or can make special arrangements for the summer, you may even consider changing up the times of day that you work.  If you’re juggling while having kids home for the summer, take the kids to the pool for a couple of hours and schedule time in your home office in the evening.  Whatever you can do to enjoy the summer will lift your spirits and keep you focused.

  2. Summer meals.  Plan to create simple summer-related meals or use gourmet “to go” meals and eat outside away from technology.  Just by getting out of the house, away from the phones, your family will find that everyone lingers over dinner longer, talks more and takes the time to enjoy the weather.  Dinner outside can easily progress into playing in the yard, which slows down a busy day and provides some quality family time.

  3. Get creative with childcare.  There are so many great activities for kids in the summertime, so take advantage of signing them up for a nature camp, letting them spend a week with grandma/grandpa or sharing duties with a friend or a neighbor.  There are so many ways to build community in a way that your children experience new people and new places, which is also good for them.  Remember, there’s no need to be a martyr. Don’t allow yourself to feel guilty about coming up with creative solutions to get everything done.

Client Case Study - Nancy Hagan

Nancy Hagan

Kay Fittes and I met 15 years ago at a Toastmaster meeting when I had just started my business.  She was a pro then and, through the years, I have seen more and more of her expertise and her caring, effective approach.

My goal in doing Presentation Coaching with Kay was to maximize the speaking invitations that were offered to me.  I was missing opportunities to expand my business, which meant I was leaving money on the table.  Enhancing my confidence was key.  Moreover, I needed an objective viewpoint and someone skilled in the field to advise and guide me.

Kay is very tuned into my needs.  She asks questions to understand the situation, and then draws out very specific, constructive ideas to facilitate solutions.  She often gives more than the letter of her written agreement.  With genuine care and concern, she took me beyond my expectations.  Kay is also a savvy marketer who is focused on maximizing results.  I always benefit greatly from her experience.  My results include:

  • Awareness of how I present my business and the development of a “marketing mind”
  • Clear and succinct articulation of my ideas
  • Delivering just the appropriate amount of information, not overloading my audience
  • Enhanced confidence is speaking situations of all types

Women who want to impact their career success with effective presentation skills should know that Presentation Coaching with Kay is such a comfortable and empowering experience.  It will definitely take you to a new level in your career/business and personal development.
