The Power of One

Kay Fittes, March, 2017

We’ve been talking and posting on social media about #WomensHistoryMonth throughout March to celebrate the women who have blazed new trails throughout history and to increase awareness for the work that still needs to be done for each of us to reach our full potential.  This includes leveraging the experience of those who have gone before us through mentorship and support for other women.  When one of us wins, we all win!

Tips on Finding Your Mentor Match

  1. Know exactly what you want from a mentor.  Select one or two areas of focus in the beginning, as one mentor will not be effective for everything.  This also prevents putting a heavy burden on one mentor.  People that are often asked to be a mentor are incredibly busy, and you never want to waste their time.

  2. Have a male and female mentor balance.  Let’s face it, a woman will understand your unique workplace challenges from a female perspective and be able to offer insights accordingly.  This is especially helpful in areas of challenge she has conquered for herself.  A male mentor can share viewpoints of how things may be perceived that we may not be aware of, or perspectives that come uniquely from his own experience.  Each gender may have a unique approach to the same challenge.

  3. Internal and external mentors are essential.  An internal mentor is someone within your own organization, workplace or industry.  This person understands the culture of your workplace or industry.  A mentor who knows these intricate details can provide advice and insights that no one else can.  If you work directly with them, they can also provide a unique perspective of how you are perceived in the workplace.  External mentors come from other companies, and different areas of business.  The balance of having an internal/external mentor, similar to the male/female balance, will provide a holistic approach to the self-improvement process that takes place in a mentoring relationship.

Be A Part Of Mentoring Monday

Come and be a part of history!  The 3rd annual Mentoring Monday, presented by BizWomen, is a speed-coaching event that takes place in 41 cities around the country on Monday, April 3.

Come take part in this amazing event,
where I will be one of the mentors!

Join me and top local business women with plenty of talent and advice to share as we gather to serve as mentors to participating women who are looking for business advice or guidance.  Each attendee has seven minutes to meet with a mentor and ask a pertinent question relative to their career.  Think ‘speed-dating’ – it’s fast-paced, exciting, a little chaotic, a lot of fun.  Ultimately, it’s a day when valuable connections are made among women across the country.  Last year, more than 10,000 women took part nationally.
