Building Self-Confidence

Kay Fittes, February, 2015

Are you lacking confidence in aspects of your professional life?  Does it seem impossible to imagine that you could ever have the confidence necessary to handle certain situations?  If it seems everywhere you look, confident people dominate the landscape, and you are the exception, take heart.  The truth is, babies are the most confident people on the planet, not adults.  Although it seems counter intuitive, self-confidence is a natural state of being.  It is the state of being completely comfortable with who and what you are, independent of what others think of you, or how you perceive them to think of you.  Read More.

The Importance of Laughter in the Workplace

Did you know that laughter in the work place . . .

  1. Creates a more relaxed atmosphere?

When was the last time you laughed at work?  If you can’t remember, chances are your work environment is tense.  Working under stress does not allow for the best productivity or creativity.  It often creates a culture of fear, where employees are afraid to take risks or think out of the box for the betterment of the business.

  2. Bolsters confidence?

Confidence requires letting go of fear, and being in a relaxed state, and we know that laughter helps people relax.  In a more relaxed culture, employees are better able to tap into their skills.  Productive use of talents leads to good results, and ultimately recognition, which bolsters confidence.

  3. Helps you take things less seriously (namely, yourself)?

I’m not advocating a loose party type of atmosphere in the office, but certainly one that allows for recognition of our humanity, and the acceptance of other’s faults and occasional mistakes.  If you miss a deadline, forget a fact or figure, or are late to a meeting occasionally, don’t beat yourself up.  Apologize, resolve to do better, and move on.

So, how do we create laughter in the workplace, especially in today’s world where everything goes at lightning fast speeds, and we are expected to do more with less time and resources?  Well, you have to be intentional. You may say, “Kay, I don’t have time for that!”  Well, it doesn’t take as much time as you might think, but it may take some bravery.  This is especially true if you work under intense deadlines, sales expectations, or in a fast-paced customer-focused setting.  The idea is to sprinkle the laughter, not be a stand up comedienne.  It may be starting a meeting with a funny story or joke, sharing an ironic thing that happened to you with a co-worker, or making light of a small mistake.  Just like many of the stories in Go Ahead and Laugh demonstrate, the power of beginning with something funny breaks down barriers and puts people at ease.

A little laughter goes a long way toward creating a workplace where people can truly be who they are, best share their talents in a way that benefits the greater good, and work on being the best version of themselves.

Client Case Study – Tammi Ector Fisse

Tammi Ector Fisse

Coaching with Kay was the first step on my path to professional success.  Four years ago I was a program administrator who longed to take my career to the next level.  Kay put me on the right trajectory by coaching me around each of the 6 P’s she advocates:

  • Power Personal Esteem - Coached me to identify and minimize personal barriers that held me back
  • Power Professional Esteem - Coached me to identify and maximize my unique value (strengths, gifts, talents, self-promotion)
  • Power Verbal Language - Coached me to speak up assertively and appropriately (negotiating, dealing with conflict, etc.)
  • Power Non-verbal Language - Coached me on how to sit at the table (literally) and position myself for credibility and authority
  • Power Presentations - Coached me to view every situation as a mini-presentation and an opportunity
  • Power Packaging - Coached me to save the peep toe high heeled pumps for outside the office!

Today, I’m a Leadership Coach in a position that allows me to be my best professional and personal self.  And I’m pursuing the Masters degree that is ideal for advancing my career - Again thanks to Kay’s coaching.

All that said, coaching with Kay was not only the first step on my path to career success, it’s the best step I’ve ever taken.
